Shower Glass

Shower Doors and Enclosures in Dubai

Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or trimmed once it has been through the furnace. Everything else about a shower door — the price, the lead time, whether it can be repaired — follows from that one fact.

The short answer

Can a shower door be repaired, or does the glass need replacing?

Hardware can be repaired. Glass usually cannot. Hinges, clamps, patch fittings, handles, magnetic strips, seals and roller assemblies on sliding doors are all replaceable items, and most shower doors that drop, drag, leak or refuse to close need one of those rather than new glass.

The panel itself is toughened safety glass, normally 8 or 10 mm. Toughened glass is cut, shaped and drilled while it is still ordinary float glass, then heat-treated in a furnace, and after that it cannot be altered — a chipped edge cannot be polished out, and a new hinge position means a new panel. A cracked panel is not a repair job in any circumstance, because once toughened glass fails it granulates completely rather than cracking.

Fixwix supplies, replaces and repairs shower doors and enclosures across Dubai, and a photograph of the fault plus the panel dimensions is usually enough to tell you which of the two you are dealing with.

What Goes Wrong

Why shower glass fails, and why it rarely fails where you'd expect

Toughened glass is roughly four to five times stronger than ordinary annealed glass of the same thickness, which is why it is the only glass permitted in a shower screen. That strength sits in a compressed outer skin with the core held in tension. Break the skin anywhere and the whole panel releases at once, which is why toughened glass does not crack and sit there — it turns into a heap of blunt granules in under a second. The failure is dramatic and the cause is almost always small.

Chipped edges, which is most of it

An exposed toughened edge is the vulnerable part of the panel. A squeegee handle knocked against it, a cleaner's bucket, a door swinging into a tap, a panel set down on a tiled floor during installation — any of these can take a chip out of the edge that looks cosmetic. It is not cosmetic. It is a break in the compression layer, and the panel can hold for months and then let go while nobody is in the room. If a shower panel has a chipped edge, plan to replace it rather than watch it.

Nickel sulfide inclusions

Occasionally a microscopic nickel sulfide particle ends up inside the glass during manufacture. It expands slowly over years, and if it sits in the tension zone it eventually splits the panel from the inside with no impact at all. This is the "the shower door exploded on its own" story, and it is real. The industry answer is heat-soak testing to EN 14179 — the toughened glass is held at around 290°C for a set period so that panels carrying an inclusion fail in the factory instead of in a bathroom. It does not eliminate the risk; it removes most of it.

[NEEDS: does Fixwix supply heat-soaked toughened glass, and is it standard or an upgrade? This is the single strongest technical differentiator available on this page and almost nobody in the Dubai market states it]

Over-tightened hinges and clamps

Glass sits in a hinge on gaskets, not metal to metal. Tighten a hinge or clamp beyond its torque and the point load goes straight into the glass, which either fails on the spot or a fortnight later. This is the most common installer-caused failure and it comes from someone chasing a door that will not stay aligned by squeezing the hinge instead of correcting the fixing.

Doors that drop

A hinged frameless door hangs its full weight — an 8 mm panel of typical door size is a substantial thing to carry — off two or three fixings in a wall. In Dubai those fixings are frequently going into large-format porcelain or a marble slab over blockwork, and a plug seated in tile adhesive rather than solid substrate will creep. The door drops a few millimetres, stops meeting the magnetic strip, and gets forced. Then the hinge gets over-tightened, and the previous paragraph happens.

Where a panel has already gone, replacement is straightforward but nothing about it is off the shelf; see glass replacement work for how a like-for-like panel is measured and reordered.

Enclosure Types

Framed, semi-frameless, frameless or a walk-in panel

A frameless shower enclosure is a set of toughened glass panels, normally 8 or 10 mm, held by wall brackets, hinges and clamps with no aluminium frame around the glass edges. A framed enclosure carries an aluminium profile on all four sides of every panel and usually runs thinner glass inside it. Semi-frameless sits between the two, framing the fixed panels and leaving the door edge bare.

On thickness: standard practice is 8 mm for most doors and fixed panels, and 10 mm where a door is unusually wide, where a panel runs a long unsupported span, or where the hardware requires it. Specifying 10 mm throughout a small ensuite adds weight to the hinges and to the wall fixings without adding anything you will notice.

A framed enclosure is not a downgrade. In a rental unit, over a bath, or in a bathroom where the walls are out of square, it is the more sensible choice — it seals better and it forgives a wall that frameless glass will simply expose.

Water Where It Shouldn't Be

A leaking shower screen is usually a floor problem

Water escaping from an enclosure gets blamed on the seals, and the seals are the cheapest thing to replace, so that is what gets replaced. It works about half the time. The rest of the time the floor is falling the wrong way, or falling nowhere at all, and no arrangement of rubber will hold water that is already running toward the door.

Check it before ordering anything: pour a jug of water at the screen line and watch where it goes. If it runs toward the drain, the enclosure can be sealed. If it sits or drifts outward, the fix is the tiling and the fall, and a new screen will not change the outcome.

Three details that do the actual sealing work. A drip seal along the bottom of the door, which throws water back into the tray rather than onto the threshold. A magnetic strip between door and jamb panel that meets cleanly along its full height — a door that is dropped will meet at the top and gape at the bottom. And silicone applied to the outside of the enclosure only, so that any water that gets behind a joint drains back into the shower instead of being trapped against the wall. Sealing both sides looks tidier and holds water in the wall build-up, which is how a screen that has never leaked into the room causes damage anyway.

Sliding doors add a fourth: the bottom track. It collects hair, soap residue and grit, the rollers ride on that, and the door starts dragging. In a family bathroom I would avoid a bottom-track slider entirely and use a hinged door or a top-hung runner if the opening allows it — the track is a cleaning job nobody does and it is the reason most sliding shower doors fail early. Where drainage is the underlying issue rather than the screen, residential plumbing is the right starting point.

How A Replacement Runs

Why the survey matters more than the installation

Every hole, notch and hinge cut-out is made before the glass is toughened. Once it comes out of the furnace, the panel is finished — so an error at step two cannot be corrected at step four, it can only be reordered.

  1. Photos and rough sizes

Send pictures of the opening and the existing hardware with approximate width and height. Most enquiries can be answered from this — including whether you need glass at all or just a hinge set.

    Same day, by WhatsApp

  2. Survey and template

Measured on site, not from a drawing. Walls are checked for plumb and the floor for fall, because out-of-square walls change the whole specification, and hinge positions are set against the existing fixings where a panel is being matched.

[NEEDS: typical working days from enquiry to survey]

  3. Cutting, drilling and toughening

Panels are cut to size, edges polished, and all holes and cut-outs machined while the glass is still annealed. The furnace stage follows and fixes everything permanently.

[NEEDS: fabrication lead time for a toughened panel, and whether heat soaking adds to it]

  4. Installation

Fixings set into solid substrate rather than tile adhesive, hinges torqued to spec, seals and drip seal fitted, silicone applied externally and left to cure.

[NEEDS: typical time on site for a standard enclosure]

  5. Cure before use

Silicone needs to cure before the shower is used, or the bead is compromised on day one and the enclosure leaks from a joint that was fine when it was applied.

Keeping It Clear

The white film on shower glass, and what makes it permanent

Dubai's supply is desalinated seawater with minerals added back before distribution, and how much reaches your tap varies with the building and its storage tanks. Sources disagree on where that lands on the hardness scale. What does not vary is the result on shower glass: a white film that returns within days of being cleaned off.

The mechanism worth understanding is that the deposit does not simply sit on the surface. Glass is microscopically porous, mineral residue works into it, and repeated aggressive cleaning drives it further in. After a few years the staining is etched rather than deposited, and at that point nothing removes it — the panel is permanently cloudy and only replacement changes it.

Two things prevent that, and neither is a stronger chemical. A protective coating applied to the glass at fabrication, which fills the surface porosity and makes the residue sit on top where it wipes off. And a squeegee used after showering, which sounds trivial and is the single biggest factor in how a screen looks in year five.

What to keep away from it: abrasive pads, scouring cream, and strong acid descalers. Acid descalers strip a protective coating in one application and attack chrome and brushed hardware finishes at the same time, which is how a screen ends up both cloudy and pitted.

Where We Fit Them

Shower door installation and repair across Dubai

Access shapes this job more than most. A 2 m toughened panel cannot be folded, and in a tower it has to reach the apartment intact.

  • Dubai Marina and JBR Tower apartments where panels go up in a booked service lift, often with a works permit and a restricted delivery window from building management.
  • Downtown and Business Bay Same access rules, and internal bathrooms with no window, so extraction is doing all the ventilation work and the glass stays wet longer.
  • Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills Estate Villa ensuites with room for walk-in wet rooms, where the floor fall decides whether a frameless layout is viable at all.
  • Palm Jumeirah Large ensuites and long unsupported panels, which is where 10 mm and a support bar stop being optional.
  • Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim Older villas with retrofits into existing tiling, where fixings meet marble slab or blockwork rather than the substrate the drawings assumed.
  • Mirdif and Al Warqa Family villas, high daily use, and the main argument against a bottom-track sliding door.
  • Discovery Gardens and International City Compact units, mostly over-bath and framed enclosures, and rented, so landlord permission comes before measurement.
  • Silicon Oasis and Academic City Apartment stock of a similar age throughout, so the same hardware sets and the same failures repeat across whole buildings.

Questions We Get Asked

Shower doors in Dubai: common questions

Can a cracked shower door be repaired?

No. Shower panels are toughened safety glass, and a toughened panel that has been compromised anywhere fails as a whole rather than cracking in one place. There is no filling, bonding or polishing a toughened panel back to serviceable. Hardware is a different matter — hinges, clamps, handles, seals and roller assemblies are all replaceable without touching the glass.

What thickness of glass should a shower screen be?

Standard practice is 8 mm toughened for most doors and fixed panels, and 10 mm where the door is unusually wide, a panel spans a long unsupported run, or the hardware calls for it. Framed enclosures use thinner glass, typically 5 to 6 mm, because the aluminium profile carries the load. Specifying 10 mm across a small ensuite mainly adds weight to the hinges and wall fixings.

Why did my shower door shatter on its own?

Two usual causes. A chipped or nicked edge that broke the compression layer weeks or months earlier and finally released. Or a nickel sulfide inclusion — a microscopic particle trapped inside the glass during manufacture that expands over years until it splits the panel from within. Heat-soak testing at the factory catches most inclusion-prone panels before they are ever installed.

Can toughened glass be cut or drilled after it is made?

No. All cutting, edge polishing, drilling and cut-outs happen while the glass is still ordinary annealed float glass. The furnace stage locks the panel permanently, and any attempt to cut or drill it afterwards destroys it instantly. This is why a replacement panel has to be measured and templated on site, and why moving a hinge position means ordering new glass.

How do I stop my shower screen leaking onto the floor?

First establish whether the seals are the problem at all. Pour a jug of water at the screen line: if it runs to the drain, new seals and a drip seal along the door bottom will hold it; if it sits or runs outward, the floor fall is wrong and the tiling is the fix. Also check that silicone was applied to the outside of the enclosure only, so water behind a joint can drain back in.

What's the difference between framed, semi-frameless and frameless?

Framed enclosures carry an aluminium profile on every edge of every panel and use thinner glass inside it. Frameless enclosures use 8 or 10 mm toughened panels held by hinges, clamps and brackets with no perimeter frame. Semi-frameless frames the fixed panels and leaves the door edge bare. Framed contains water best and forgives out-of-square walls; frameless looks better and depends on the bathroom being built correctly.

How do I get the white film off shower glass in Dubai?

While the residue is still sitting on the surface, a mild acidic cleaner and a soft cloth will lift it. Once it has worked into the glass over several years it is etched rather than deposited, and no product removes it — the panel is permanently cloudy. Prevention is a protective coating applied at fabrication plus a squeegee after showering. Avoid abrasive pads and strong descalers, which strip coatings and attack chrome.

How long does a new shower enclosure take?

The sequence is survey and template, then fabrication, then installation and curing. Fabrication sets the pace, because cutting, drilling and toughening all happen off site and the furnace stage cannot be shortened. Nothing can be adjusted after that stage, so an accurate survey is what protects the timeline. Hardware-only repairs are a different matter and are usually a single visit.

Getting It Looked At

Send a photo before you order glass

Most shower door problems are diagnosable from two photographs — one of the whole opening, one close on the hinge or the fault. Half the enquiries we get for new glass turn out to be a hinge set, a magnetic strip or a drip seal.
